Beaches in Pucón and on Villarrica Lake
In short
The best-known beaches on Villarrica Lake are Playa Grande and La Poza in Pucón, and Pucará, Playa Blanca, Los Chilcos and Calfurray in Villarrica (Megatiempo, Jan 2026; Rough Guides). The Lago Villarrica Harbor Master sets swimming areas of about 100 m (PEI rules 2026-2027), and in summer the regional health authority monitors microcystin with green, yellow and red flags (BioBioChile, Dec 2025). Only swim with lifeguards and a green flag.
Villarrica Lake covers 176 km², with Villarrica on its western shore and Pucón on the eastern one (sources: Wikipedia; Sernatur, chile.travel).
Beaches in Pucón
- Playa Grande: it lies at the end of Calle Lincoyán, and in summer you can rent pedal boats, jet skis and rowing boats (source: Rough Guides, "Pucón"). For the 2026-2027 season, the Lago Villarrica Harbor Master offers swimming areas of about 100 m at the Lincoyán and Ansorena-Colo Colo access paths and in the water park sector, areas for renting non-motorized boats and, at the far end of the beach, areas for motorboats (source: Lago Villarrica Harbor Master, rules for minor permits (PEI) 2026-2027, July 6, 2026).
- La Poza: the black-sand beach where Avenida O'Higgins ends (source: Rough Guides). Boats are launched and hauled out here, and during those maneuvers swimming, kayaking, diving and towed water sports are banned (source: Lago Villarrica Harbor Master, Ord. No. 12000/118, September 1, 2025).
- Playa Carmelito: also in the municipality of Pucón, with two swimming areas of about 100 m (source: 2026-2027 rules).
Beaches in Villarrica
- On January 4, 2026, the Harbor Master listed Pucará, Playa Blanca, Calfurray and Los Chilcos as available beaches in Villarrica (source: Megatiempo, January 4, 2026).
- Playa Blanca in Villarrica and the Correntoso sector have swimming areas of about 100 m; Playa Pucará is assigned to the Ministry of Defense, so the Harbor Master grants no permits there (source: 2026-2027 rules).
Green flag and lifeguards
- Only swim at approved beaches, with lifeguards and a green flag; wear a life jacket for kayaking or stand up paddle, and a helmet on a jet ski (source: Villarrica harbor master, quoted by Megatiempo, January 4, 2026).
- Emergencies on the lake: call 137, Maritime Emergencies (source: 2026-2027 rules).
- The water is zoned: from the shore, the first 100 m are for swimmers; from 100 to 200 m, for sailing, rowing and other non-motorized boats; and beyond 200 m, for motorboats. The Harbor Master may adapt them at each beach (same source).
- Water sports: the lake offers sailing, kayaking and water skiing, and boat trips leave from the Villarrica and Pucón piers (source: Sernatur, chile.travel, January 7, 2026). Guided adventure activities such as jet skis, kayaking or banana boat rides must be registered with Sernatur, Chile's tourism board (source: 2026-2027 rules).
Water quality
- The background: the lake basin has been a saturated zone for chlorophyll "a", transparency and dissolved phosphorus since 2017, and its pollution control plan has been in force since its publication on August 13, 2026 (source: Official Gazette, Decree No. 12 of 2025, Ministry of the Environment).
- What the plan includes: an early warning system for algal blooms, with public data in summer, and a plan to inform swimmers about each beach's suitability (same source).
- Monitoring at the beach: in summer, the regional health authority (Seremi de Salud) measures microcystin, a toxin produced by some algae, at five beaches in Pucón and Villarrica. On December 24, 2025, Playa Grande got a red flag, while Los Chilcos and Pucará had a green flag (source: BioBioChile, December 25, 2025). By January 4, 2026, Playa Grande was listed as available again (source: Megatiempo). Check the flag every time you go.
- What each color means: green, fit for recreational use; yellow, special caution for children, immunocompromised people and pets; red, full restriction when microcystin exceeds 10 micrograms per liter (source: Pucón Municipality, January 10, 2025).
- If you get symptoms: itching, burning or an upset stomach after contact with the water, go to an emergency room (source: BioBioChile, December 25, 2025).
Pets, fires and accessibility
- Pets: we found no official rule on pets at these beaches (the yellow flag asks for caution with them, according to Pucón Municipality).
- Fires and cars: according to Megatiempo, fires are banned, and no vehicle may enter the beach (sources: Megatiempo, January 4, 2026; Ministerial Order No. 2 of 1998, cited in the 2026-2027 rules).
- Accessibility: a 2018 guide by Senadis, Chile's disability agency, lists the La Poza waterfront promenade and Playa Pucará among examples with accessibility features, and warns that some sites have not been inspected (source: Senadis, "Guía práctica de playas accesibles", 2018). Check with each municipality.
