Pucón weather month by month

Chile's Meteorological Office (DMC) has a station at Pucón airfield, but it has only been running since 2022 and does not yet have 30-year normals (source: Pucón Aeródromo station record, climatologia.meteochile.gob.cl, checked October 2026). So we use the Pucón station of the Dirección General de Aguas (DGA), at 230 m, with 1991-2020 averages calculated in the CR2 Climate Explorer.

Temperatures have data for 73% to 86% of those years and rainfall for 93% to 100%. What the numbers say

  • It rains all year. Adding up the monthly averages gives about 2,140 mm a year, and June, July and August account for about 43% of it (source: same table).
  • Summer is the driest season, not a dry one: January and February average 5 to 6 rainy days, against almost 19 in June (same source).
  • Average lows stay above 4 °C in every month at the town station (same source), although a single night can be much colder.

What to expect each season

  • Summer (December to February): average highs of 21 to 24 °C and lows of 9 to 11 °C (source: table).
  • Autumn (March to May): March is still mild (21.3 °C average high), but by May rainfall is over 240 mm (same source).
  • Winter (June to August): highs of 11 to 12 °C and 271 to 379 mm of rain a month (same source). It is snow season on the volcano.
  • Spring (September to November): temperatures rise (from 14.8 to 18.8 °C average high) and rain eases, although October still averages almost 13 rainy days (same source).

Best time to go, depending on what you want

  • Beaches and lakes: January and February, the warmest and driest months (source: table). On Villarrica Lake, each year's maximum surface temperature ranged from 17.35 to 21.65 °C in measurements from 1986 to 2020 (source: Rodríguez-López et al., Scientific Reports, November 17, 2025).
  • Snow and skiing: Centro de Montaña Pillán, on the slopes of Villarrica Volcano, opened its runs for the 2026 season on June 28 (source: BioBioChile, June 30, 2026). Check with the resort that it is operating before you go.
  • Hiking: December to March has the fewest rainy days (5 to 8 a month, per the table). In winter, with 17 to 19 rainy days a month (same source), trails are usually wet.

Villarrica, Caburgua and Curarrehue

The whole Lake District is wet, but not equally so. Adding up the 1991-2020 monthly averages of DGA stations (source: CR2 Climate Explorer, October 2026):

  • Villarrica (210 m): about 2,140 mm a year, almost the same as Pucón.
  • Curarrehue (420 m): about 2,590 mm.
  • Lago Caburgua (480 m): about 2,850 mm, with data for only 53% to 66% of the years, so treat it as a rough guide.

Compared with Temuco and the mountains

  • Temuco gets much less rain: the official normal at Maquehue is 1,114.8 mm a year (source: Chile's Meteorological Office, 1991-2020 normals, daily climate report of October 15, 2026), about half of Pucón's.
  • The mountains are wetter and colder: at Puesco (Aduana), at 620 m, rainfall adds up to about 3,240 mm a year, and July has an average high of 8.3 °C and an average low of 0.8 °C (source: DGA, 1991-2020 averages, CR2 Climate Explorer).

Snow: town and mountain

With average lows above 4 °C all year in town and close to 0 °C at Puesco (source: tables above), what you will mostly see in Pucón in winter is rain; for snow, head uphill, to the volcano and the mountain passes.
