Getting around Araucanía without a car

By Equipo araucania.tours · October 15, 2026

In short

Without a car, you can tour La Araucanía by bus from Temuco's terminals: Buses JAC reaches Pucón in 2 to 2.5 hours, and there are daily buses to Curacautín, Lonquimay, Melipeuco and the coast. The Tren Araucanía links Temuco with Victoria and Pitrufquén, and the airport has taxis, transfers and car rental.

You can see much of La Araucanía without a car: Temuco is the bus hub, with daily services to the lakes, the mountains and the coast (source: Sernatur, chile.travel). This guide explains how to get around without a car, and which places still call for a vehicle or a tour.

  • Terminal Rodoviario de La Araucanía: the main terminal, at Vicente Pérez Rosales 1609, for long-distance buses (source: Pasajebus).

Bus to the mountains and the coast

  • Curacautín, Lonquimay and Melipeuco: direct daily buses leave from Temuco's terminals, a trip of almost two hours (source: Sernatur, chile.travel, December 2025). Buses to Lonquimay pass through Malalcahuello, near Malalcahuello Hot Springs: tell the driver where you want to get off (source: Araucanía Andina).
  • Puerto Saavedra and Budi Lake: intercity buses run from Temuco to the coast (source: Sernatur, chile.travel, January 2026). See Budi Lake.

The train: Tren Araucanía

EFE runs two services from Temuco (source: EFE, efe.cl, checked on October 15, 2026):

  • Victoria–Temuco: 65 km, with stops such as Lautaro and Cajón; runs every day.
  • Pitrufquén–Temuco: 29.3 km in about 41 minutes, stopping at Padre Las Casas, Quepe and Freire; runs Monday to Saturday.

When we reviewed this guide, EFE warned of longer-than-usual travel times due to operational adjustments (same source). The train does not reach Pucón or the mountains. For railway history, visit the Pablo Neruda Railway Museum.

From the airport

La Araucanía Airport is 24 km south of Temuco and offers taxis, transfers and car rental (source: Chile's Ministry of Public Works, MOP, concession report, September 2025). For Pucón there is a shared transfer with a desk in arrivals; book the return trip in advance (source: RELATES 2026 guide).

When a tour makes sense

Some places have no buses. Tolhuaca National Park has no public transport (source: Sernatur), and for Corralco Ski Resort a private or rented car, or a private transfer, is recommended (same source). That is where a tour with transport helps. Choose operators listed in the Sernatur registry, which is mandatory for adventure tourism (source: Chilean Law 20.423).

Information reviewed on October 15, 2026. Timetables, fares and routes change: confirm with each company, at efe.cl and at conaf.cl before you travel.
