Lonquimay Volcano

Volcanoes Reserva Nacional Malalcahuello

In short

A volcano in the Malalcahuello-Nalcas National Reserve. The Corralco ski area sits on its slope.

Lonquimay is a 2,865-meter stratovolcano inside the Malalcahuello-Nalcas National Reserve (source: Volcano Discovery). On 25 December 1988, after a century of quiet, a fissure opened on its northeast flank: the eruption lasted 13 months and built a new cone, Navidad (Christmas) Crater (sources: Volcano Discovery; Andean Geology).

Things to do

  • Trek to Navidad Crater in summer, across volcanic sand and scoria (source: Sernatur, chile.travel).
  • Skiing and snowboarding at Corralco, on its slope (same source).
