Piedra del Águila (Eagle Rock)
In short
A rock viewpoint at 1,460 m in Nahuelbuta National Park, reached by a 6.4 km trail (about 2 hours, moderate, according to CONAF).
Piedra del Águila (Eagle Rock) is the best-known viewpoint in the Nahuelbuta range: a rock at 1,460 meters inside Nahuelbuta National Park (source: CONAF). From there you can see the Pacific Ocean and the chain of snow-capped Andean volcanoes at the same time (source: Sernatur, chile.travel).
Things to do
- Trail to Piedra del Águila: 6.4 km, about 2 hours, moderate (source: CONAF).
- Coastal-range araucaria forest along the way (source: Sernatur, chile.travel).
- Wildlife: the park is one of the last refuges of the endemic Darwin's fox (same source).
Getting there
Angol is the gateway to the park. From Temuco it's about 3 hours via route 5 and R-86; much of the road is gravel and a high-clearance or 4×4 vehicle is recommended (source: Sernatur, chile.travel).
Before you go
Summer is the best season because of road conditions. Services are limited: bring water, food and warm clothes, don't light fires outside designated areas and take your rubbish back (source: Sernatur, chile.travel).
